Dual and Combined Degrees

The Master of Science (MS) degree is intended for students interested primarily in the academic subject matter of the field rather than in professional practice. It is also a natural entry point for those who will eventually continue for their PhD. Thus, students focus on building a strong foundation in a particular specialty field, including its pertinent research methods. No practice placement is required.

The MS in Public Health is currently offered in three fields of specialization:

The MS degree calls for a minimum of 60 credit hours, of which a maximum of 12 credit hours may be used for thesis preparation.

Even though the MS is not designed primarily for professional practice, faculty members believe that students should gain an appreciation of the scope of the field of public health. This is accomplished by completing courses in at least two areas of knowledge basic to public health. The adviser and student will select specialized courses and electives in recognition of the student’s specific interests and the field’s expectations.

Each MS student must complete a curriculum approval form before the end of the first quarter of enrollment, indicating the courses to be taken to meet the specialization requirements and the expected electives.

Degree requirements

  1. Core courses in knowledge basic to public health (8 credit hours minimum)
  2. Specialization courses (20-30 credit hours, depending on specialization)
  3. Approved electives
  4. Thesis or culminating project.

The Thesis or Culminating Project

The thesis or culminating project, an integral part of the MS degree, allows the student to: (1) investigate a topic of personal interest and importance to the field and (2) integrate and synthesize knowledge and skills presented in the program. A committee composed of the student’s adviser and at least one other graduate faculty member guides the research.
