Medical Care costs now total about $2.2 trillion annually in the U.S., more than 16% of our nation's entire gross domestic product. More Americans work in health care professions than in any other occupational sector. Despite these resources, many American families have trouble accessing timely and appropriate care. Policymakers are calling for substantial system reforms to ensure that people can obtain high-quality care at an affordable cost.
The Division of Health Services Management and Policy is at the national forefront of efforts to improve health care for all Americans. Our division's stated mission is to "conduct high-quality research, education, and service activities to improve the organization, financing and delivery of health care." Our research aims to find solutions for delivering care more efficiently and effectively. Our educational programs turn out leaders who believe in providing compassionate care that will build healthier communities.
We accomplish these goals through highly acclaimed faculty and exceptionally qualified students. The division has reached national prominence in many areas. Our MHA program is currently ranked 12th in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Our alumni include CEOs of some of the nation's most illustrious health care institutions. Our research profile and faculty capabilities are expanding dramatically.
Recently, we announced the appointment of Dr. Thomas Wickizer to the newly endowed Loebs Professorship position. We are dramatically expanding our PHD program with new resources and outstanding students, most of whom are pursuing their studies with full funding. Our affiliation with the Center for Health Outcomes, Policy, and Evaluation Studies creates numerous opportunities for meaningful research experiences for students and faculty.
E. Gordon Gee, president of the Ohio State University, has said that this is Ohio State's time. I would also suggest that this is HSMP's time. I welcome you to visit our web pages to learn more about our people, our programs, and our accomplishments.
