Alumni institute focuses on health care leadership

Posted 10/09/2009

The Health Services Management and Policy (HSMP) Alumni Society will host its annual Management Institute, a full-day professional and leadership development event, Oct. 23 at the Doubletree Hotel in Worthington, Ohio. This year will also mark the 40th anniversary of the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program.

The theme of this year's institute is "The Leadership Skills that Define Healthcare Excellence." The keynote speakers are Quint Studer and Carson Dye.

Studer, founder and CEO of Studer Group, is considered by many as the main impetus for developing tools and techniques for organizations attaining great results. Dye is the senior vice president of Witt/Kieffer, a national executive search firm devoted to organizations that improve the quality of life. Dye's practice centers on executive search assignments for hospitals and health systems and is an expert in the area of leadership.

Brian Gibbs, PhD, associate dean at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, will be the keynote at the diversity breakfast speaking on "Diversity Leadership and the Role of Today's Healthcare Executive."

"We are poised for an exceptional Management Institute this year. We have some of the industry's most respected leaders lined up to speak which will provide substantial value to the alumni who attend," said Rick Goins (MHA, 2003), chair of the 2009 Management Institute planning committee.

Each year the institute is organized by alumni society volunteers. The first management institute was in 1975.

"The 40th anniversary of our MHA program is a great opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments of our outstanding and accomplished alumni. Their efforts not only benefit the health care community, but also our current students who look to alumni for mentoring and guidance,” said Allard Dembe, ScD, chair, Division of Health Services Management and Policy.

This year, the alumni society will also celebrate the arrival in September of Thomas Wickizer, PhD, the first Stephen F. Loebs Endowed Professor of Health Services Management and Policy, who will be introduced at the Management Institute.

The institute will be followed by the annual HSMP alumni homecoming banquet at the Crowne Plaza downtown Columbus. At the banquet, the HSMP alumni society in conjunction with the College of Public Health will recognize leaders from OhioHealth and OSU Health System for their continued support of the program and its graduates.

The MHA program's first class of seven started in 1969. Founded by Bernard Lachner, who was an Ohio State administrator at the time, the program quickly grew, becoming one of the highest-ranked health administration programs in the country. Now part of the College of Public Health, the Master of Health Administration program is ranked 12th by US News and World Report.

Registration is available for the institute and banquet at http://hsmp.clubexpress.com/. Deadline to register is Oct. 19.
