Three honored with 2022 ETHOS Awards

The College of Public Health honored three members of the faculty and staff who exemplify the university’s shared values and commitments to excellence, diversity and innovation as part of the second annual College of Public Health Ethics at Ohio State (ETHOS) Awards.

Scot Erbe, facilities manager and lab compliance officer, and Ashley Felix, associate professor of epidemiology, were recognized with the Excellence & Impact Award for their work embodying the principles of strong leadership in pursuit of the CPH vision and mission.

Vaccine hesitance dropped faster among Black Americans, study finds

Black Americans who were initially hesitant about receiving a COVID-19 vaccine were more likely than whites to warm up to the idea as the pandemic wore on and to view vaccines as necessary for protection, a new study has found.

The research highlights the importance of not making assumptions about race-based viewpoints regarding health care, and illustrates the likelihood that access — not just distrust or skepticism — is a significant obstacle to higher levels of COVID-19 protection among Black Americans, the study authors said.

The first step to becoming less biased and more open to and inclusive of people from all backgrounds is to become educated.

The College of Public Health has championed this idea through its Community of Inclusion program for students, faculty and staff, which serves to advance participants’ understanding of diversity, equity and inclusive excellence through readings, trainings and other opportunities to expand knowledge.

Bill Miller receives national Achievement Award

Bill Miller, professor of epidemiology and senior associate dean of research, was named the recipient of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association’s 2021 Achievement Award.

The ASTDA Achievement Award honors a mid-career individual who has made significant contributions toward the prevention, control and ultimate eradication of sexually transmitted infections — either through an outstanding body of work or a single major achievement in the field. 

Michael Bisesi receives President and Provost’s Award for Distinguished Faculty Service

Michael Bisesi, vice dean of academic affairs and academic administration and professor and interim chair of environmental health sciences, has received the Ohio State President and Provost’s Award for Distinguished Faculty Service, presented annually to up to three faculty members whose contributions have made an impact on the quality of the university.
