Bill Miller receives national Achievement Award

Bill Miller, professor of epidemiology and senior associate dean of research, was named the recipient of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association’s 2021 Achievement Award.

The ASTDA Achievement Award honors a mid-career individual who has made significant contributions toward the prevention, control and ultimate eradication of sexually transmitted infections — either through an outstanding body of work or a single major achievement in the field. 

Student Medical Reserve Corps volunteer recognized for work in vaccine rollout

Milli Osei-Tutu was supposed to study abroad in Spain to complete her public health capstone experience, but COVID-19 changed her plans. Instead, the graduating senior in public health sociology has been a key player in central Ohio’s vaccine rollout as an intern for Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

College honors 2020 Public Health Champions

Those in the field know that so much of the meaningful, life-changing work of public health goes on quietly, without fanfare or accolades. But leadership at Ohio State’s College of Public Health believes in recognizing those who use their voices, their energy and their expertise to make a difference. This year’s Champions of Public Health Awards are presented to individuals and organizations whose actions personify the college’s mission to improve the lives of Ohioans. This year’s five winners were nominated by various community leaders and selected by a faculty committee.

Stanley Lemeshow honored at Summer Program

CPH faculty, staff, alumni and summer program participants were in attendance on Wednesday evening where Lemeshow, professor of biostatistics and founding dean of CPH, was honored for his continued excellence in the field of public health professional development.

The director of CPHP, Andy Wapner, DO, MPH, hosted the celebration. Dean William Martin II, MD, introduced incoming dean Amy Fairchild, PhD, MPH, who gave remarks to the audience. Dean Fairchild begins her term July 1.

Lemeshow receives Cupples Award from Boston University

His passport tells a story. Multi-colored stamps bring back memories: Holland, Australia, China, India. For professor Stanley Lemeshow, PhD, teaching over 100 courses around the world has allowed him to share his passion for biostatistics with the future generation of public health leaders.

As a result of his lectures reaching worldwide audiences, his work on applied logistic regression and his leadership positions, Lemeshow was awarded the 2019 L. Adrienne Cupples Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service in Biostatistics.

CPH hosts 2nd Annual Student Case Competition

The College of Public Health hosted the 2nd Annual CPH Student Case Competition on Tuesday. With a focus on improving infant mortality in central Ohio, six teams of graduate and undergraduate students developed plans to increase community outreach and the enrollment of high-risk women into the Moms2B program. 

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center sponsored the event and provided the two winning teams with cash prizes: $1,500 for the first-place team and $750 for the second-place team.

Epi PhD candidate wins national award for dissertation on pediatric traumatic brain injury

Jin Peng, MD, MS, PhD candidate of epidemiology at The Ohio State University College of Public Health, received the Joseph J. Tepas Award at the 2017 Pediatric Trauma Society Annual Meeting in November. The competitive award is issued annually to recognize non-physician researchers who demonstrate excellence in pediatric trauma research.

Peng was honored for her dissertation research, “Caregiver-perceived Barriers to Return for Follow-up after Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI),” which was funded in part by an Ohio Department of Safety (ODPS) EMS grant.
