Undergraduate

Protecting our future

Sarah Hatcher, BSPH ’19

I’m spending my semester working on research regarding women’s autonomy and its effects on spousal abuse in sub-Saharan Africa. This type of work is especially important to global health. When looking at developing countries, improving women’s education and opportunities not only results in healthier women, but also healthier children.

New undergraduate general education will benefit public health students

Expected to launch autumn 2022, Ohio State’s new general education (GE) model for undergraduate students will focus on foundation courses, thematic pathways and a new “launch seminar” and “reflection seminar” that help students connect the dots between courses. It will also allow students to better tailor their academic experience to align with their interests and goals.

I was fortunate last summer to spend 10 weeks in Malawi, the “Warm Heart of Africa.” I traveled to this small country in the southeastern part of the continent to work on an epidemiological study through the UNC Project-Malawi, under the direction of William Miller, MD, PhD, MPH, and Kathy Lancaster, PhD, MPH, professors of epidemiology at Ohio State’s College of Public Health.
