Application Instructions for Graduate Programs

Domestic Applicants

All applicants are required to apply through the centralized application service SOPHAS, except:

- Master of Health Administration (MHA) Applicants
Applicants to the MHA program may apply through SOPHAS or HAMPCAS.
Applicants to the MHA program are required to have completed an Introductory Accounting course before their first term of enrollment in the program. This course does not have to be completed at the time of application.

- Applicants to the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Biostatistics apply directly through the Statistics department. Please go here for information.

- NOTE:  the Master of Public Health: Health Services Management & Policy will only consider applicants who already have or are currently completing a professional degree (MD, JD, etc.) or graduate degree (MBA, MSW, etc.).

All application materials MUST be sent directly to the centralized application service. A completed application includes the following:

  • Completed SOPHAS or HAMPCAS application
  • Official transcripts from all previous or current college coursework
  • Official GRE scores (SOPHAS code: 4233, HAMPCAS code: 0705)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume or CV
  • Ohio State University Supplemental Application (this will be emailed to you from Ohio State once your centralized application is complete)

International Applicants

All applicants are required to apply through the centralized application service SOPHAS, except:

- Applicants to the Master of Health Administration program may apply through SOPHAS or HAMPCAS.
- Applicants to the interdisciplinary PhD program in Biostatistics apply directly through the Statistics department. Please go here for information.

  • WES evaluations for all non-U.S. transcripts (SOPHAS requires that all students obtain a WES evaluation of non-U.S. transcripts)

Application Deadlines

Applicants are encouraged to submit their application 3-4 weeks prior to the posted deadline to allow for processing time. Applications received after the deadlines will be considered only if space remains available.
International applicants applying to meet the College of Public Health Fellowship deadline MUST have ALL materials submitted to SOPHAS or HAMPCAS by November 1st.
Domestic applicants applying to meet the College of Public Health Fellowship deadline MUST have ALL materials submitted to SOPHAS or HAMPCAS by December 1st.

May 15 - Domestic applicants to the MPH-Veterinary Public Health program, MPH-Clinical Translational Science program, MPH-Biomedical Informatics program, and MS-Biomedical Informatics program deadline

Application Instructions for Bachelor of Science in Public Health major

Admission to the public health major is competitive. Applicants are selected on the basis of their academic record, leadership, work and volunteer experiences and potential for success.

Pre-Public Health Major (Pre-Majors)

Admission Criteria

New First-Year Students / Freshman: New First Year students must have a minimum ACT score of 26 or a minimum combined SAT score of 1170 for incoming freshman to be directly admitted to the College as a Pre-Public Health major.  

Admitted first year Ohio State students who do not meet the incoming freshman criteria can enroll in the Exploration program to consider alternative majors. Students who are not declared Pre-Public Health majors can still complete prerequisite courses and apply to the Public Health major.

Transfer Students Students transferring to Ohio State must have a minimum 2.80 cumulative GPA and a minimum of 30 credits from the college in which they last earned transfer credit to be directly enrolled as a Pre-Public Health major.

Current Ohio State Students:  Current Ohio State students that want to switch to the College as a Pre-Public Health major, must have a minimum 2.80 cumulative OSU GPA and a minimum of 12 credits.

Public Health Major

Admission Criteria

Applicants must have an OSU cumulative GPA of 2.8 and a minimum of 30 credit hours by the end of Spring Semester.  Interested students must complete and submit an application and prerequisite courses to be considered for admission to the program.  Admissions applications for Autumn 2016 admission will be available December 15, 2015 (see link below under "Application Deadlines and Review").

*Applicants must complete all prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher.

How to Access the Application
  1. Log into the Application Portal
  2. Select "Baccalaureate Professional" from the three options
  3. Once the field is generated, select "Baccalaureate Professional Applications"
  4. Enter "public health" in the Academic Program/Plan field
  5. Select "Columbus" from the Campus dropdown menu and "Bachelor's Degree" from the Degree dropdown menu
  6. Click "Search"
  7. Choose "Autumn 2016" for Start Term

Application Deadlines and Review

Applications for Autumn 2016 will be available starting December 15, 2015. The deadline to apply is: February 15, 2016.
