A note from Interim Dean Karla Zadnik

Interim Dean Karla Zadnik

As I write, we are turning the corner from spring to summer and I’m already beginning to feel excited about what the next academic year will bring for the College of Public Health and for the university. This issue of the college’s digital magazine has only added to that enthusiasm.

As you may know, I’ve been leading the college for a year as interim dean during the ongoing search for a permanent dean while also acting as interim Ohio State’s executive vice president and provost for the last six months. In this broader university role, I’ve had my eyes on the big picture impact of our institution in my day-to-day work in a way I had not experienced previously. It’s been fascinating and at times daunting, and the experience has given me a deeper appreciation for the breadth of ways in which our faculty, alumni, students, and staff are making people’s lives better and healthier in real time.

This issue of our College of Public Health Magazine includes the introduction of a series of stories highlighting the ways in which members of our public health community are having an impact on the broader community — a series we’re calling “Buckeyes in Action.”  I encourage you to read about how Tory Hogan, an associate professor in Health Services Management and Policy, and student researchers are asking important questions about health care systems’ efforts to improve health equity and increase inclusiveness within hospitals.

You’ll also learn in this issue about other significant research advances, our standout Master’s of Health Administration case competition, and the novel video-based assignments our undergraduates are diving into — helping them hone their communications skills alongside their public health expertise. Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Karla
