About

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) and community partnerships create important possibilities for knowledge production and theory building, while raising difficult questions about power, extraction, and the beneficiaries of academic research. In this session, two media scholars working across academic and creative practice will discuss their community-based work with communities affected by social and political exclusion, the roles of curiosity and trust-building in good faith research practices, and what partnerships looks like when we recognize that research can only minimize, rather than fully negate, harm.

Assistant Professor Rasel Ahmed from the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts will discuss his filmmaking with queer communities in Columbus, Ohio, and Bangladesh. He will also reflect on his experiences of being approached as a research subject because of his refugee status, and how being on the other side of the researcher-participant relationship has shaped the way he approaches community members in his own creative and scholarly practice. Assistant Professor Laura Partain from the School of Communication will talk about several of her projects, including interviews with refugees and those with parole status in Columbus, OH (political communication and participation) and 6-month long interviews with homeless and itinerant communities in Indiana (stable cell-phone access).
