Leadership opportunities for public health students

Cook With Communities' national leadership team seeking applicants

Kyle Yamat, a medical student at the College of Medicine (OSUCOM), currently serves as president and co-founder of Cook With Communities (CWC), a national nonprofit founded here in Columbus. Their mission is to advance food equity and community health through hands-on nutrition education and culturally responsive cooking instruction in underserved communities. The organization operates through affiliated university and community chapters, currently including Ohio State Undergrad, OSUCOM, and Penn State College of Medicine.

This year, they are expanding the national leadership team and looking for motivated students to join them. Students can develop:

  • National leadership early in training. Directors help set strategy, program standards, and evaluation for chapters across multiple institutions during a period of organizational growth.
  • Applied public health and nonprofit experience. Roles span program evaluation, partnerships and grant writing, financial compliance, marketing, and chapter development, giving students concrete work to point to in applications and interviews.
  • Research and dissemination. Members can contribute to community-informed research and program evaluation and help present our work at national conferences.
  • An interdisciplinary network. Team members work alongside students, healthcare professionals, educators, and community leaders committed to food equity.
  • A flexible, remote commitment. The team is distributed across universities and meets virtually, with time commitments starting at 1 to 2 hours per week.
