Greater Columbus INSIGHT celebrated for community impact

Joanne Patterson, JaNelle Ricks lead study focused on LGBTQ+ health needs

Greater Columbus insight study

Greater Columbus INSIGHT, a research study led by Assistant Professor Joanne Patterson and Associate Professor JaNelle Ricks focused on the experiences of LGBTQ+ adults, was recognized as one of Ohio State’s 2026 Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship.

This certification from Ohio State’s Office of Outreach and Engagement celebrates projects that demonstrate excellence in community-engaged scholarship.

Through interviews, listening sessions and focus groups, Greater Columbus INSIGHT gathers information from local LGBTQ+ community members and leaders to identify health needs and strengths. These will inform local programs, policy and funding priorities to support central Ohio’s LGBTQ+ community.

This study is the first formal community health needs assessment focused on LGBTQ+ adults in central Ohio. This work is conducted by scientists from Ohio State, Columbus Public Health and Franklin County Public Health, and a community advisory broad representing residents and stakeholder groups.

INSIGHT was co-founded in 2023 by Patterson and Wilson Figueroa, who transitioned from a role at the College of Public Health to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute last year.
