Wanting to learn more about the veterinary field? Join VAW Global Health Alliances at The Ohio State University for an amazing hands-on learning experience abroad! As a veterinary intern, you’ll work alongside licensed veterinarians, local communities, and VAW Global staff to provide supervised care to animals while learning how veterinary practice is applied in diverse global contexts.
During clinics, interns rotate through stations that offer valuable professional exposure:

  • Intake & Vitals: Welcome animals and their
  • owners, collect their history, record symptoms, and measure vital signs such as temperature, pulse, and respiration rate—all under the supervision of trained professionals after completing required training. Information is then prepared for the veterinarian’s review.
  • Consultation: Shadow local veterinarians as they perform exams, make diagnoses, prescribe treatments, and provide vaccines or deworming when needed. Interns may assist with tasks that give them unique insight into real-world veterinary practice and the critical role of animal healthcare in communities.
  • Professional Development Activity: Collaborate with partners to gain knowledge about local species, including their daily routines, nutrition, vaccines, habitat maintenance, and enrichment activities. These activities give interns an opportunity to broaden their understanding of veterinary sciences beyond clinic work.

This program also highlights the importance of animals to local livelihoods and cultures, giving interns a holistic perspective on veterinary medicine in global health. Outside of clinic hours, interns will have time to explore Peru, immerse themselves in its culture, and connect with peers who share the same passion for animal health and sustainable impact. This is a two-week intensive trip that’s valuable for aspiring veterinarians and any students interested in global healthcare collaboration.

We are now accepting applicants from all majors for our summer trip to Peru! Leadership positions are also available.
