Student research positions

Dr. Xu and Dr. Haeder from the Health Services Management and Policy division are conducting a research project to address knowledge gaps consumers experience when navigating provider networks for mental health services.

Registration deadline

Dr. Xu and Dr. Haeder are recruiting students to work as “secret shoppers” to learn more about the issue. Most Americans obtain insurance coverage through network-based managed care arrangements. There is limited but growing evidence that these arrangements may impede access to care, particularly for those who already have challenges navigating the complex U.S. health system. At the same time, regulatory efforts to protect consumers, when adopted at all, may do little to ensure patient access. The project is expected to run from September through December 2025. This is a remote job paid at a rate of $16/hour. All majors are welcome.

Main tasks will include making phone calls and participating in data collection. Work hours are flexible, and will likely average 10 hours per week during typical business hours. Work is remote.
