Biography
Julia/Julie M. Applegate (she/her) is a senior lecturer in the Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at The Ohio State University. Ms. Applegate is a skilled educator and experienced presenter who has designed curricula, conducted Train the Trainer programs and presented at local, state, national and international conferences on public health, HIV/AIDS and gender and sexuality topics. Her work centers questions of health equity, diversity and inclusion, focusing primarily on marginalized and underserved communities. Ms. Applegate has worked on numerous federal and state grants and is experienced in grant writing and implementation. She has done policy and program development at the local, state and international level as a government and nonprofit employee and as a member of a board of directors. In 2024 she was awarded the Provost's Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer.
As an activist and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Ms. Applegate was a founding member of numerous LGBTQ+ sport and cultural institutions in Central Ohio and beyond, including H.I.S. Kings, The Ohio Splash, Scarlet and Gay Alumni Association, The International Drag King Extravaganza, the International Gay and Lesbian Sport Association, the LGBTQ+ Health Initiative in the City of Columbus and the Equitas Health Institute. Presently she is studying the impact of loneliness and social isolation in lesbians over 50 and working on a documentary film about Ohio's longest running lesbian bar.
