Capstone Research in Public Health

Capstone research experience under the guidance of a faculty mentor in a basic or applied area of public health. In this capstone course, students integrate classroom experiences and principles with a hands-on research experience.

Prerequisite(s): PUBHLTH 3180 or 3180E; enrollment in public health major; and junior or senior standing; or permission of instructor.

Senior Honors Thesis

An independent senior thesis course with faculty advisor. Subject matter will vary depending upon student's topic. At least two semesters are required for the BSPH degree with research distinction. Failure to receive a mark of S in this course is a disqualification for special honors.

Undergraduate Research Thesis

Conducting a research project and writing a thesis is a capstone option for BSPH students. It allows the student a significant opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to an applied research project. This is done under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

Prerequisite(s): PUBHLTH 3180 or 3180E, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and PUBHLTH‐BS major, approval of research proposal by undergraduate research committee and permission of instructor.

Public Health Data Analytics I

In this course, students will gain a very general introduction to data analytics concepts and methods in the context of current and emerging public health issues. Students will be exposed to foundational concepts in data analytics that are relevant to the design, analysis and interpretation of data‐driven decision‐making in public health and health care settings.

Prerequisite(s): PUBHBIO 2210 or STAT 3202, 3470 or STAT 5301 or equivalent or permission of instructor.

Public Health Foundations of Maternal and Child Health

With a primary focus on the United States, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) in the public health context. Students will explore the major health problems, foundational programs and theories, and public policy issues impacting the well-being of women and birthing people, children and families.

This course will prepare upper-level undergraduate and graduate students on the key elements of how policy can be used as an intervention to promote primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.

Introduction to the emerging and interdisciplinary field of public health informatics. This course will highlight the history, current and future use of informatics in the public health settings, and give students an understanding of the role and broad application of informatics to promoting health and preventing disease. Overview of current and emerging global health issues, their determinants, actions and interventions.

Methods in Quantitative Data Analysis

Fundamentals of biostatistics and epidemiology. Will cover core knowledge areas in quantitative data analysis, morbidity, mortality and risk assessment to understand population health.

Prerequisite(s): Graduate student standing in Master of Public Health or Master of Health Administration Program or permission of instructor. Co-requisite: PUBHLTH 6002.

History, Values and Essential Services of the U.S. Public Health System

Health outcomes for individuals and populations are impacted by a variety of social, economic and environmental factors. To understand how these social determinants create or reduce opportunities for health, it is critical to understand how both the public health and health care systems have been developed, have evolved and are now organized to either contribute to or reduce disparities between the outcomes of different populations. This course, the first of two foundations courses, will cover the values, history and essential services of the U.S. public health system and the foundations of the social and environmental determinants of health, including the impact of racism, poverty and other structural inequities. Modules will concentrate on how the public health system has addressed communicable and non-communicable diseases through progress in environmental, social and economic policies and practices, impacting health throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries and accounting for more than two-thirds of the gains in life expectancy over the past 100 plus years.

This course will address the methodology, conceptual frameworks and strategies for planning and evaluating public health programs.

Essentials of Population Health

This is the second of two foundational courses describing how policies, systems and communities interact to either contribute to or reduce disparities between the health outcomes of different populations. This course will cover organization, delivery and payment of health care services in the United States and across the world, the framework for organizing the presentation and use of information concerning the effect of environmental conditions on health status.

Prerequisite(s): Graduate student standing in Master of Public Health or permission of instructor. Completion of PUBHLTH 6001 and 6002. Corequisite: PUBHLTH 6003

Essentials of Public Health

A comprehensive overview of the history and philosophy of public health, and the core principles, concepts and tools used in promoting the health of populations. The course focuses on the breadth of the field and the cross-specialization perspectives on major issues in public health.

Prerequisite(s): Enrollment in Master of Science in Public Health (PUBHLTH‐MS) or Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health programs (PUBHLTH‐PH), Doctor of Philosophy in Biostatistics (BIOSTAT-PH), Master of Science in Environmental Sciences (ENVSCI-MS) or Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences (ENVSCI-PH) or permission of instructor.

Applied Quantitative Methods in Population Health

This course introduces the fundamental principles of biostatistics, focusing on their application and interpretation within the context of public health research. The primary objective is to equip students with the skills to critically read understand and interpret statistical data and findings presented in professional and scientific literature.

Current Topics in Environmental Public Health

This course will introduce students to key foundational concepts in the field of environmental health sciences. Students will learn how factors in the environment impact health outcomes. Moreover, students will learn about sustainable solutions to improve well-being while minimizing toxic effects at individual and community levels, including higher-level policies and practices.
