Please join the College of Public Health for an important discussion about practical approaches to reducing the toll of firearm deaths, including those from suicide. Dr. Emmy Betz, an emergency physician and researcher, has worked with everyone from hospital administrators to gun shop owners to protect public health and reduce firearm deaths. After her talk, Betz will be joined by a panel of Ohio State and Columbus-area experts in gun safety and injury prevention, including moderator Laura Prater, an assistant professor in the college’s Division of Health Services Management and Policy.

Dr. Emmy Betz, MD, MPH, is an emergency physician and nationally recognized leader in firearm injury prevention and suicide prevention. She is currently a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she is the Founding Director of the Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative. She is also a professor of epidemiology and deputy director of the Injury & Violence Prevention Center. Betz has been invited to work with numerous organizations spanning the civilian to veteran spectrum, including the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Bar Association, multiple VA workgroups, the Department of Defense Suicide Prevention Office. In 2023 she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
