Abstract

Biomedical research is entering a transformative era powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). At the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, the Office of Data Sciences (ODS) integrates advanced AI with secure, AWS-native infrastructure to accelerate discovery and improve care across pediatrics. Anchored by our CAP/CLIA–validated Varhouse genomic data warehouse and the AVA interpretation workflow, ODS enables researchers and clinicians to unify large-scale datasets—from genomics to the electronic health record—and move rapidly from data to insight. First, GENiUS, our AI-enabled genomic medicine platform, analyzes clinical signals to prioritize neonates for rapid genome sequencing and automates continual re-analysis as new knowledge emerges, leveraging our CAVaLRi ML algorithm to surface likely diagnostic variants and recover findings in previously non-diagnostic cases. Second, DREAM applies large language models to streamline high-quality behavioral health research, improving cohort assembly, analytic reproducibility, and time-to-result through human-in-the-loop workflows. Together with robust governance (HIPAA/NIST) and translational pipelines that integrate insights back to care, these capabilities shorten time to diagnosis, scale complex analyses, and advance equitable, data-driven pediatric medicine.
