Biography

Ashish R. Panchal, MD, PhD is a professor of emergency medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, research director for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), and a nationally recognized investigator in emergency care epidemiology and public health surveillance. His research focuses on the application of large-scale emergency medical services (EMS) databases to address pressing public health challenges, including the opioid epidemic, cardiovascular disease, injury prevention and healthcare workforce development.

Dr. Panchal's work leverages national EMS data containing hundreds of millions of patient encounters to evaluate population health trends, healthcare utilization patterns and the impact of public health interventions. A key area of his research has been the use of EMS data to better understand the opioid crisis. Through analyses of the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS), he has examined trends in naloxone administration and demonstrated how EMS records can serve as a valuable surveillance tool for monitoring nonfatal opioid overdoses. His work has also highlighted the rapid growth of layperson-administered naloxone prior to EMS arrival, providing evidence of the impact of community naloxone distribution and harm-reduction initiatives on overdose response.

In addition to substance-use epidemiology, Dr. Panchal's research spans resuscitation science, emergency care systems, evidence-based guideline development, and EMS workforce well-being. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has served as a lead investigator on numerous federally funded and foundation-supported studies.

Nationally, Dr. Panchal serves as chair of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care (AHA/ECC) Committee and has contributed to the 2015, 2020 and 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. He is board certified in emergency medicine and emergency medical services and continues to serve as EMS medical director for Delaware County EMS and Delaware County Emergency Communications.
