Approaches to Health Services Research I

This course is designed to be a foundational course in the PhD specialization in Health Services Management and Policy. This course is intended to expose students to the field of health services research through an examination of classic and current research on health services delivery and health policy. Through lectures, guided discussions and reading assignments, students will gain an understanding of the salient questions and issues health services researchers have attempted to address and the quasi-experimental methods, as well as other methods they have employed to do so. This course will stress student participation in discussions.

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of issues in the management of information and information technology in health care organizations, the role of information technologies in improving organizational performance and the application of information technologies in health service organizations.

Operations Management and System Design

This course examines the fundamental theories, principles and practices for designing and managing operations. The course is structured to emphasize the unique aspects of process and system design within health care organizations and community health systems, including processes that cross organizational boundaries and include diverse stakeholders. Key topics covered include capacity and process flow, introduction to lean operations, quality improvement frameworks and tools, and patient safety.

Health Services Strategy and Marketing

Students will learn principles, discipline and analytic tools that comprise successful strategic management in health care organizations, including: strategic assessment, strategy development, implementation planning and marketing. Emphasis will be placed on exploring strategic issues related to transitioning from volume to value‐based models of care, impacts of ACA and population and community health.

This is a service-learning course in which students conduct statutory and regulatory research, literature reviews and legal epidemiology research. Students will learn how this work can be used for advocacy.

Building on the foundations of Executive Skills I, this course focuses on developing advanced professional competencies essential for leadership and career advancement in health administration. Key topics include strategic communication, inclusive leadership, giving and receiving feedback, and managing relationships.
