Ahmad El Hellani brings organic chemistry background to tobacco research

Meet Ahmad El Hellani, an assistant professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences who analyzes tobacco products, identifying harmful toxicants that could impact the long-term health of smokers. 

El Hellani shares why he made an early career pivot into regulatory science, what he wishes everyone know about the tobacco industry and his advice for public health students.  

MPH student qualifies for US Olympic squad

When Katelyn Abeln turned 13, she aged out of her 4-H BB gun team, so she and her father, Jerry, started one for air pistol. At that young age, Abeln never imagined it would lead her to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Abeln is a student at The Ohio State University, pursuing her master’s degree in public health and epidemiology. She was a vital part of Ohio State’s pistol team, which won national championships in the last three consecutive years.

Alumni give $350K to create professional development opportunities for MHA students

College of Public Health’s Master of Health Administration alumni Bill Considine ’71, Mark Neaman ‘74 and Ned Zechman ‘74 have pledged a collective $350,000 to support student professional development, creating a permanent source of funds for MHA students to attend conferences and case competitions, and seek other opportunities for networking and career growth.

Seed grants fund three new public health studies

College of Public Health faculty were recently awarded $75,000 in seed funding to support new projects focused on understanding violence against children, tobacco cessation and dementia.

HB Franchino-Olsen, faculty fellow in the Division of Health Behavior and Health Promotion, received a $25,000 CPH grant for a pilot study investigating how children and adolescents in South Africa view and understand violence.

This course will prepare graduate students on the key elements of how policy can be used as an intervention to promote primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.  Course activities will build skills for the evaluation of when policy is an appropriate strategy, and how to prepare a systematic review of evidence for the use of a policy strategy.  Each student will be able to choose a policy topic and prepare a literature review, policy scan, or health impact assessment as a manuscript formatted for submission to a scientific journal.

This course will prepare upper-level undergraduate students on the key elements of how policy can be used as an intervention to promote primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.  Course activities will build skills for the evaluation of when policy is an appropriate strategy, and how to prepare a policy brief on a formal policy issue that impacts population health.  Each student will work with a small group to choose a policy topic and prepare research-informed policy brief.
