Health and Health Care Services in the U.S.

An in-depth exploration of the U.S. health care system. Topics covered include health and health care disparities, social determinants of health, health care access and utilization, financing of care through public and private health insurance, provider reimbursement, assessment of quality, quality improvement, and new forms of health care delivery and payment.

Examines the major theories and concepts of organizational behavior and leadership and applies these to challenges facing public health and healthcare organizations. This course will prepare students to develop questions for and utilize results from health care database research. Examines the role of project management in executing successful projects. The course focuses on concepts and tools of basic project management, with special emphasis on managing projects in health care and public health settings. Students will learn fundamental techniques for project planning, scheduling and monitoring through case studies and various types of project management exercises.

The U.S. Mental Health Delivery and Financing System

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the significant issues and trends in behavioral health delivery systems in America. It covers the organization, financing and delivery of behavioral health (including mental health and substance abuse) services in the United States and offers a detailed overview of the U.S. mental health delivery system. Students will explore various organizations, including inpatient psychiatric hospitals, outpatient clinics, community mental health centers, residential treatment facilities and crisis intervention services, focusing on their functions, services, business models and populations served.
