Public Health Law

The course will focus on the use of legal tools to improve the public's health. The course will survey the legal framework in which the government may regulate for the public's health, addressing issues including the origins and scope of public health authority, constitutional limits on public health powers, emergency legal preparedness and public health tort litigation.

Health Care Law for Managers

Provides a comprehensive overview of the U.S. legal system as it applies to the U.S. health care field. Topics covered include professional relationships, medical malpractice, privacy, end-of-life issues, healthcare fraud and abuse, and the regulation of clinical research.

Tobacco Regulation and Policy

This course examines the regulation of tobacco with a focus on the role of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This course highlights the history, significant provisions and effects of the 2009 Tobacco Control Act, as well as the vital role that public health researchers and professionals play in influencing how the FDA implements the act.

This course is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in health services management focusing on human resources management and organizational behavior.

Overview of leadership and organizational change theories as well as the application of those theories to case studies in health sector organizations.

Health Services Finance I

Examines finance and accounting principles as they are applied to health service organizations. Topics include financial statement analysis, budgeting and forecasting, cost behavior and cost allocation, capital financing, reimbursement methodologies, revenue cycle management and working capital management.

Prequisite(s): An introductory course in financial accounting or permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for 820.

Health Services Finance II: Financial Decision‐Making

Provides an in-depth examination of financial decision-making in health service organizations, with emphasis on applications of decision support systems. Emphasis is placed on application of the financial principles, tools and decision-making processes essential to managing and leading health care organizations. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of how financial management supports strategic and operational objectives in hospitals, physician groups and other health service entities.

Health Economics for Experienced Professionals

Focuses on the use of economic analysis and economic evaluation for healthcare decision making. Students will examine how economic forces influence the behavior of patients, providers, payers and policymakers, and how these interactions shape health outcomes, costs and access to care. Core topics include demand and supply of healthcare services; health insurance markets; provider incentives; market competition and regulation; externalities; cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis; and the role of government in health care.

Systems Integration

Students will address complex population health issues using tools learned through the MPH-PEP degree program. Small groups will work through a population health case developed by a community partner, incorporating project management, leadership, health economics, evaluation and operations management tools.

Strategic Management and Program Development

This capstone course serves as the culminating experience for graduate students in health administration, integrating knowledge and skills from across the curriculum into the practical application of strategic management and program development. Students will implement and evaluate a comprehensive strategic initiative or program plan addressing a real-world health care challenge using techniques and methods for strategic management and project planning in health care organizations and settings.

Strategic Change for Public Health and Population Health Management

Explores the theories, concepts and methods of strategic planning and the management of organizational change as it applies to public health and population health management endeavors. Key topics include population health frameworks, data-driven decision-making, cross-sector collaboration, value-based care models, organizational transformation and change leadership. The course emphasizes systems thinking, stakeholder engagement and the alignment of financial and operational strategies to achieve measurable improvements in community and population health.
