Every year, Public Health Buckeyes take what they learn in their Master of Public Health programs and put it to practice. These applied practice experiences help students meet educational and professional development goals.

“Having an individual at my APE site who was willing to mentor me really helped me get the most out of this opportunity.”

Question
What were you able to do in your APE?

Answer

This APE offered a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in collecting relevant health-related data to inform strategic planning and community health assessments.

It was a 100% remote position. My day-to-day tasks included compiling relevant county level data from publicly available data sources (American Community Survey, County Health Rankings, etc.), creating data visualizations, meeting with community stakeholders and writing reports.

I also created data repositories of relevant county-level demographic and health-related data, met with stakeholders to inform data needs for strategic planning and community health assessment purposes and collaborated with other organizations to synthesize information into a compelling, data-driven strategic planning narrative.

Question
What advice would you give students going into their APE?

Answer

Go into your APE with an open mind and do not be afraid to try something new. It is a great opportunity to diversify your experience in a supportive, learning environment.
