Whether you’re looking to expand or update your knowledge and skills, preparing for a career change or pursuing your passions, Ohio State’s Occupational Safety and Health graduate certificate or minor program provides you the education to enhance your expertise for positions engaged in workplace safety and health.

This interdisciplinary offering from the Division of Environmental Health Sciences and Department of Integrated Systems Engineering, teaches you how to identify, evaluate and control hazardous situations and exposures that may contribute to related, and preventable, injuries and illnesses among workers as well as members of the community.

Adding this area of emphasis as a degree enhancement to other applicable degree programs will contribute to shaping well-rounded individuals qualified to work as and/or with occupational safety and health professionals.

Learning outcomes

Students completing the curriculum to earn the graduate certificate in occupational safety and health will be prepared to:

  1. summarize major theoretical and regulatory (e.g. OSHA; MSHA) aspects of occupational safety and health to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control the physical, chemical, biological, mechanical and ergonomic agents and factors associated with workplace environmental settings and occupationally related illness and injury
  2. apply contemporary principles and best practices of occupational safety and health
  3. conduct workplace setting safety and health walk-through surveys/audits with recommendations for occupational injury and illness prevention and mitigation

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree (includes college-level math, biology and chemistry)
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA

Curriculum

The occupational safety and health curriculum is a 15-credit hour program consisting of four required courses and one selective course.

Students pursuing a graduate degree in the College of Public Health may overlap a maximum of 6 credits with their graduate degree and the certificate.
