Every year, Public Health Buckeyes take what they learn in their Master of Public Health programs and put it to practice. These applied practice experiences help students meet educational and professional development goals.
“This experience has given me such a wider perspective from unique, vulnerable populations. I am especially grateful to be working with a fellow CPH-HBHP alumni, who really understands what I’m experiencing and supports me so well.”
Question
Why did you choose Nationwide Children's Hospital for your APE?
I was already working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and my APE gave me an opportunity to put my experience to work with greater creativity and leadership skills.
During my APE, I did qualitative data analysis of transcripts from family treatment court dockets, interviewed parents about resources in their community and social supports from neighbors, and presented to a child welfare conference on the importance of the public health approach.
Question
What advice would you give other students for their APEs?
Use what you’ve got. I was nervous to stay within Nationwide Children’s because I wanted to branch out, but the connection I’d already made yielded much better opportunities that have allowed me to learn more. I am very glad to continue to grow in a space I already know and still look forward to venturing out to new places when I have significantly better capacity to do so.
