Biostatistics professor honored for outstanding research, commitment to mentorship

Biostatistics Professor Michael Pennell was named a 2025 fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), an honor that acknowledges his exceptional contributions to statistical sciences and his commitment to advancing the field.
The ASA selected Pennell for the prestigious fellowship for his notable methodological contributions to Bayesian non-parametrics, survival analysis, and risk assessment, along with extensive collaborative efforts. The association also noted Pennell’s exemplary mentoring, teaching and national service.
Pennell said he is “very honored” to be recognized by the ASA and his colleagues. He will be recognized in August during the Joint Statistical Meetings in Nashville, Tenn. alongside 45 other new fellows.
Chair and Professor of Biostatistics Kellie Archer lauded Pennell’s “outstanding methodological research, impactful collaborative work and strong commitment to mentoring future statisticians.”
“Mike’s contributions to the division and his involvement with organizations such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Statistical Association and the Math Alliance reflect a deep dedication to his profession and to serving others,” she said.
Archer, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Rebecca Andridge, Professor Bo Lu and emeritus faculty Stan Lemeshow and Haikady Nagaraja are also ASA fellows. The American Statistical Association is the world’s largest community of statisticians and data scientists.
