Job description
TRC Inc. is seeking an intern to work on an analysis of U.S. motor vehicle crash data. The intern will support analytical efforts to use retrospective crash data to identify safety issues for future research. The consequences of motor vehicle crashes are often described in terms of the number of fatalities or injuries among vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and other road users. However, current research on crash outcomes rarely quantifies the long-term consequences of those injuries.
This practicum/internship opportunity involves the development of a system for quantifying the long-term effect of injuries on the health and function of road-users involved in crashes. The student will work with a group of international experts who are assessing currently available coding systems for predicting long-term outcome of injuries by assessing the accuracy of these coding systems on injury datasets from around the world. The day-to-day responsibilities for this practicum position will involve application of these existing coding systems to available U.S. datasets to contribute to this international effort, as well as the development of improved methods for use of these coding systems. The student will have the opportunity to co-author an academic publication on this research effort.
Essential Functions*
• Review and analysis of available U.S. motor vehicle crash data, engineering, and medical literature
• Development of a system for quantifying the long-term effect of injuries on the health and function of road-users involved in crashes
• Expand upon previously established coding systems in SAS for analyzing the outcomes of motor vehicle crashes
• Ensure clear, accurate communication of the status and results of the above activities; ensure that results meet or exceed customer quality expectations
• Operate independently and cohesively in a team environment with customer driven deliverables and milestones
*TRC Inc. is an equal employment opportunity employer and is willing to make a change or adjustment to a job or work environment that allows a qualified individual with a disability to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of a particular job.
