Internship

The Data Management Intern is a student position utilizing a combination of technical expertise, creativity, a collaborative spirit, and self-motivation. The Data Management Intern uses skills to gather, manipulate, and visualize a wide range of datasets in support of the development and maintenance of MORPC’s Actionable Insights web-based data platform. The Data Management Intern works under the direct supervision of the Research and Data Officer.

This position is responsible for supporting MORPC’s team of data professionals, for example, by collecting data, reviewing and cleaning data, supporting the development of data pipelines, and supporting the development of interactive tools to visualize data. Key strengths of the Data Management Intern include strong technical skills for working with data across the data lifecycle, organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a passion for collaboration and innovation.

Examples of Duties:
Request and/or obtain third-party data.
Evaluate data quality. Report findings to senior staff and recommend actions to render data fit for its intended purpose.
Follow provided work instructions to carry out automated and semi-automated data management processes (extract-transform-load)
Create process documentation, including work instructions and data flow diagrams.
Capture metadata for input and output datasets and variables
Implement data visualizations (charts, maps, etc.) in ArcGIS Online web applications.
Gather mission-critical data from unstructured documents such as land use plans, media coverage, and technical reports.
Collaborate with MORPC staff in Data & Mapping and other departments to produce narrative content to accompany data visualizations.
Provide responsive and professional customer service.

Follow established agency practices for maintaining the security and integrity of sensitive or confidential information.

Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required):

This position requires strong organizational and time management skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a passion for collaboration and innovation. Working knowledge of MS Office 365 suite is essential. The position requires technical skills, including extracting data from various types of databases and inspecting data and detecting missing or anomalous data using analytical and/or visual methods. Familiarity with data analysis and transformation is required. Experience with data visualization tools and principles of data visualization design is required. This is a team-oriented position, although the applicant must possess the ability to work independently. A strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal communication skills are a must. Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the region is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Preferred):

Experience using ArcGIS is preferred. Experience developing data visualizations in ArcGIS Online is preferred. Experience with programmatic data transformation, analysis, and management (e.g., using Python, R, or similar) is preferred.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

This position is open to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a course of study in Data Science, Data Analytics, Data Engineering, Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or other related disciplines.
