Food Safety Intern

Organization
Ohio Department of Agriculture
Purpose/Mission of Organization
The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) helps Ohioans in many ways including: supporting agriculture, protecting consumers, safeguarding plants and animals, and conserving natural resources. As a cabinet-level agency, we answer to the Governor, and we get a lot of stuff done! Ohio’s food and agriculture industry is huge, contributing $124 billion to the economy and employing one in eight people. This success starts on the farm, but these aren’t your great grandpa’s farms! They may have started way back when, but many of Ohio’s more than 70,000 farms are modern, state-of-the-art operations that use technology to maximize production to feed our growing population.
Job Type
Internship
Job description

Training: The intern will receive an abbreviated version of the Division’s food safety training as if they were a new hire. During this time, they will focus on the regulatory roles and responsibilities of the department. The intern will work approximately 75% of the time in the Division of Food Safety but will also spend time with the Dairy Division, Meat Inspection Division, and the Consumer Protection Lab. The intern will shadow our inspectors while they conduct inspections of manufactured food facilities, and they will shadow/assist with sampling of various food products. Upon completion of an inspection there will be a discussion of findings between the inspector and the intern so that the intern understands not only what had occurred at the facility but also the significance of the violations and how those relate back to the regulations. When the intern is not in the field they will be working on their project and completing on-line courses.
The intern will attend weekly staff meetings, all-staff meetings and participate in regulatory calls with the FDA and firms, as available.
Project: The intern will be assigned a project to complete during the internship. This year’s candidate will develop a series of questions that the Division will use to develop the Firm Description section of our new database: FoodNet. A second project, if time allows, will be for the intern to start researching and documenting what resources the Division would need to start the process of applying for a Rapid Response Team grant with FDA. This would include reaching out to other RRT states to see what resources they may be willing to share.
