Professor of Epidemiology Bill Miller was named president-elect of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER), a national organization focused on academic research in the field. The society sponsors the scientific journals American Journal of Epidemiology and Epidemiologic Reviews and holds an annual meeting.
Miller will serve a three-year term — as president-elect in the first year, president in the second year and past president in the third year.
“I am a mentor at heart, and to me, SER is a society for mentorship. … Ensuring that SER remains that place where early career folks want to be is one of my highest priorities,” Miller said. “Epidemiology evolves, and the current generation of students and recent graduates will define what epidemiology is for years to come.”
He said he will do everything he can to ensure that marginalized groups are heard, and their voices represented — both within the organization and in the broader field of epidemiologic research.
Miller’s areas of expertise include sexually transmitted infections, substance use and outbreak investigations. He received a PhD and MD in neuroscience from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine and an MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health.
