Associate Professor Tasleem Padamsee spoke about her study on the impact of opioid review programs in a new Milbank Quarterly webinar. The conversation explored concerns about negative consequences of stricter prescription limitations on both patients and providers.

State-level opioid review programs aim to curb overprescription and overuse of opioids, prompting concerns that restrictions could make unmanaged pain more common and harm patient/provider relationships.

Padamsee’s study focused on the impact of these programs on injured workers and their health care providers in Washington and Ohio. Patients generally reported satisfactory pain control and had positive relationships with providers, she found. The study also suggested that delays in prescription approval slowed healing.
