Funding to support evaluation of COVID-19 surveillance system in local schools
The Ohio State Office of Outreach and Engagement recently awarded more than $215,000 to 23 recipients to support the development of public policy reports, grant proposals and impact reports for programs, performances or exhibits.
One of those grants went to Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences Ayaz Hyder, who will lead a community-directed evaluation of the COVID-19 Analytics and Targeted Surveillance System (CATS), which Hyder helped implement in K-12 schools across central Ohio last July. By tracking possible signs of COVID-19 infection like student and teacher absences and school nurse visits, CATS has served as an early warning system for COVID-19 case clusters in public schools.
With the Outreach and Engagement Grant, Hyder will conduct an evaluation of CATS in partnership with the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Evaluation Studies (HOPES). The central Ohio schools that have been using CATS will also provide vital feedback during the evaluation process.
