Maria Gallo, PhD, associate professor in The Ohio State University College of Public Health’s Division of Epidemiology, received a $120,000 grant from the Society of Family Planning to help educate adult women about contraceptive options in Kingston, Jamaica.

Gallo and the research team hope to debunk myths and confusion surrounding contraceptive safety. Contraceptive methods often go unused because of false concerns about the side effects and health risks associated with them, according to Gallo.

Andy Wapner, DO, MPH, clinical assistant professor at Ohio State’s College of Public Health and Director at the Center for Public Health Practice (CPHP), received a $7,800 grant from the Hocking County Health Department to allow CPHP to help guide Hocking County’s Health Department toward accreditation.

“This work builds off the Center’s previous facilitation of Hocking County’s Health Improvement Plan in 2017,” Wapner said. “This work will align the agency with community activities and contribute to the agency’s ability to become an accredited public health agency.”

Andy Wapner, DO, MPH, clinical assistant professor at Ohio State’s College of Public Health and Director of the Center for Public Health Practice (CPHP), received a $9,984 grant from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) to begin developing a program that will educate and support governmental public health agencies and help them achieve public health accreditation.

Igor Mrdjen, a PhD student in the College of Public Health’s Division of Environmental Health Sciences, has received the Science Communication Award at the International Association for Great Lakes Research’s 60th Annual Great Lakes Research Conference, held in Detroit in May.
