Autism study suggests connection between repetitive behaviors, gut problems

In children with autism, repetitive behaviors and gastrointestinal problems may be connected, new research has found.

The study found that increased severity of other autism symptoms was also associated with more severe constipation, stomach pain and other gut difficulties.

The research, which appears in the journal Autism, found no association between social and communication difficulties and gastrointestinal symptoms.

A study conducted by researchers with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians shows a significant increase in EMS administration of naloxone during a recent five-year period. Naloxone is a life-saving drug that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Epidemiology PhD student's study finds 2 in 5 teens texting while driving despite state bans

Li Li, MS, a doctoral student of epidemiology at the Ohio State University College of Public Health, is the first author of an article examining individual- and state-level factors associated with teens texting while driving. The study, done in conjunction with researchers from The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), looked at Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from 35 states.

Research forums a rite of passage for many students

In March, three of the college’s doctoral students placed in the top three in their respective categories at the Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum.

Brittany Keller-Hamilton (epidemiology) placed second for her research on the effects of outdoor tobacco advertising on young males; Seungjen Lee (environmental health sciences) placed second with his research on microcystin accumulation in vegetables; and Igor Mrdjen (environmental health sciences) placed third for his research on cyanotoxins.
