Combined program prepares students, alumni to thrive

Everywhere you look, public health is addressing today’s most pressing issues.

And College of Public Health students are passionate about gaining a depth of experience and applying it as quickly as they can to the challenges they want to tackle.

The college offers a multitude of options to support those goals, including the BSPH-MPH combined degree, which helps students earn both degrees in less time, save money and demonstrate their abilities and commitment to public health.

‘Meet people where they are’

As part of ongoing work to combat overdose deaths, Ohio State students, including several from the College of Public Health, went to work this spring to educate the Ohio State community about how to stay safe if they use drugs, and how to help others who might be in harm’s way.

Buckeyes for Harm Reduction, a student organization focused on combatting the opioid crisis in Ohio, helped educate their peers and taught them how they can take action during the group’s annual Harm Reduction Week project in March.

Student-athlete helps relaunch Columbus public health camp

After COVID shuttered Columbus Public Health’s summer camp for middle schoolers for two years, public health sociology undergraduate Katelyn Abeln took on the challenge of relaunching the program during her summer capstone project.

As an intern, she led the effort to teach 12- to 15-year-old students about the ways public health impacts their lives during Camp Public Health, a weeklong experience that includes a visit to Ohio State’s Columbus campus.

‘One Health’ certificate connects health sciences for better public health future

Tiffany Claeys’ career in health sciences was jump-started after she took an undergraduate course in immunology. She was fascinated and started to learn everything she could about it.

“I think that the immune system is one of the most complex systems, especially the human immune system,” she said. “It affects every single day of our lives. It’s beautiful.”
