Q & A: After Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian made landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida as a Category 4 storm late last month, devastating communities and impacting millions of people.

Aram Dobalian, professor in the Division of Health Services Management and Policy and associate dean of academic affairs, is an expert in health care quality and access during natural disasters. Dobalian discussed the role of public health leaders and health administrators in disaster response as destructive events become more frequent and widespread.

Bill Miller receives national Achievement Award

Bill Miller, professor of epidemiology and senior associate dean of research, was named the recipient of the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association’s 2021 Achievement Award.

The ASTDA Achievement Award honors a mid-career individual who has made significant contributions toward the prevention, control and ultimate eradication of sexually transmitted infections — either through an outstanding body of work or a single major achievement in the field. 

2 college faculty members retiring this year

Sandra Tanenbaum, PhD, retired at the end of May after nearly 28 years at Ohio State. Tanenbaum, a professor in health services management and policy, has instructed numerous students throughout her career.

When asked what she will miss most about OSU, Tanenbaum stated, “The thing I will miss most at OSU is without question the students. The opportunity to engage them in learning about the US health care system­­, and especially to get them thinking in new ways has been a great joy.”

You’re a Buckeye alum who pursued your doctorate at the University of Minnesota. What brought you back to Ohio State?

I grew up in this midwestern, urban culture, and both my family and my wife’s family live in Cincinnati. When I decided to keep doing biostatistics in academia, we began looking at places that have a similar culture and would allow us to easily get back to see our families on a regular basis. Out of our options, Ohio State’s biostatistics department was the best fit.
